Why palm oil dominates surfactant chemistry, what it costs, and how European feedstocks replace it without a performance penalty.

Palm kernel oil is the invisible backbone of the surfactant industry. It is cheap, high yielding and rich in the C12 to C14 chains that detergency depends on. It also carries deforestation exposure, certification cost, regulatory scrutiny under the EU Deforestation Regulation and a supply chain that runs halfway around the world. Palm-free is no longer an ethical preference, it is a procurement strategy.

Why the industry ended up on palm

Surfactant tails need a specific chain length to work well. Palm kernel and coconut oil deliver exactly that range at industrial volume and low cost, which is why lauryl chemistry became the default across dish, laundry and personal care.

The consequence is a concentration risk. A formulation portfolio built on lauryl derivatives inherits the price behaviour, the geography and the reputational profile of a single tropical crop.

What palm dependency actually costs

The direct cost is visible in certification and traceability programmes. The indirect cost is harder to budget: due diligence obligations under the EU Deforestation Regulation, retailer scorecards, brand risk and volatile freight over long distances.

The European feedstock alternative

PureSurf builds its molecules from renewable European building blocks on the PureSynth platform. The feedstock does not compete with food production and does not require tropical agriculture, so the supply chain stays inside a regulatory jurisdiction that the customer already operates in.

The important point is that the substitution is not a compromise. NEXOVANT reaches a CMC of 80.7 ppm, up to 10× lower than benchmark amine oxides, with up to 8× lower interfacial tension, so the palm-free option is also the lower-dose option.

Switching a formulation to palm-free

Most conversions start with a single high-volume position rather than the whole portfolio. Replace the incumbent amine oxide at equal active content, verify foam, viscosity and stability, then test a reduced dose to capture the CMC advantage.

Because NEXOVANT is readily biodegradable under OECD 301F (GLP) and shows 14× lower aquatic toxicity in the F Pro grade and 57× lower in the F Eco grade (EC50, Aliivibrio fischeri, ISO 11348-3:2007, 30 min, GLP), the environmental profile of the finished product usually improves at the same time.

Is RSPO-certified palm oil good enough?

Certification reduces risk, it does not remove the dependency, the audit cost or the long supply chain. A European feedstock removes the exposure entirely.

Does palm-free mean weaker cleaning performance?

Are PureSurf feedstocks in competition with food?
